  1. Zechariah taught that His body would be pierced with a spear.
    Prophesied: ZEC 12:10
    Fulfilled: JOH 19:34-37

ZEC 12:10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication,

ZEC 12:10b … so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him,

ZEC 12:10c … as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.

Heb 13:20 Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the Great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord,

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, …

Romans 9:8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

Zec 10:12a I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and supplication

Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Proverbs 3:12 For whom the LORD loves He reproves (disciplines), Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

Zec 12:10b … so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him,

they will turn to Jesus, the pierced One.

His head was pierced with thorns, His hands and feet were pierced with nails, and a spear pierced His side.

The Greek word “kalou” means good.

The Greek work “kakou” means evil.

“Pierced” = dâqar (daw-kar’) to stab; strike (thrust) through, wound.

In John 12:32, Jesus states, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth (which he will be at the cross), will draw all men to Myself.”

Colossians 1:15 He (TLJC) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

And so, He will be, by this prophecy of His death, also the firstborn to resurrection, which is most important in our Hope.

Colossians 1:18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Amos 5:16 Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the Lord, “There is wailing in all the plazas, And in all the streets they say, ‘Alas! Alas!’ They also call the farmer to mourning And professional mourners to lamentation.

The one thing which is going to help them (us) is repentance toward God and faith in our Savior Jesus Christ.

Zechariah 12:10, “They will look… they will mourn” in our prophecy:

We see the pattern for coming to believe on Jesus Christ and a true repentance.

men first look upon him whom they have pierced, and then, but not till then, they mourn for their sin. (Spurgeon)

Sight, or perceiving things through the eyes, is a complex process. It all begins with LIGHT…

“The cornea focuses most of the light. Then, it [the light] passes through the lens, which continues to focus the light,” (Dr M.Fromer)

John 12:46 (Jesus speaking) “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.

John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Heb 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

John 15:26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So, choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,

Philippians 2:15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,

among whom you appear as lights in the world,

God is the Creator of all things, by a divine design, not chance!

Weep = bâkâh (baw-kaw’) = to make lamentation; to mourn with tears.

Mourn = sâphad (saw-fad’) = to tear the hair and beat the breasts; to wail aloud with tears.

“The eye which looks to the pierced One is the eye which weeps for Him.” (Spurgeon)

Joel 2:12 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping and mourning;

Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

In Zec 12:1, 3, 10;  It is made clear that the “Me” they look upon is the LORD God – Yahweh – Jesus Christ – Himself.

Numbers 21:9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

John 3:14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;

  1. Zechariah taught that His body would be pierced with a spear.
    Prophesied: ZEC 12:10
    Fulfilled: JOH 19:34-37

John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.

John 19:37 And again another Scripture (fulfilled) says, “THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.”

  1. The perfect tense of the Greek word TELEO is a dramatic perfect; it happened in the past and the results go on forever.
  2. He exhaled and then simply never inhaled again.

  1. He had to push His head forward, in order to push His body into a certain position, leaning far forward.  This was so that the blood in His body could pool in the ventricles of the heart.

  1. Christ literally pushed His body forward and held that position as He gave up His Spirit, in physical death.

John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

“Pierced”= dâqar (daw-kar’) to stab; strike (thrust) through, wound.

There are 2 categories of death that are experienced by Christ on the cross,

Physical and Spiritual

The phrase “blood of Christ” throughout Scripture refers to His entire saving work.

By pushing his head forward at physical death, our Lord prepared His body for the piercing thrust of that Roman soldier’s spear.

Jesus knew this spear was coming; He told Zechariah the prophecy 500 yrs earlier, which being inspired Zechariah recorded in the Scripture.

For this act, of the piercing spear, revealed the True humanity of Christ, by proving He was of flesh and blood.

John 10:11“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

A large amount of the blood in His body settled in the left and right ventricles of the heart.

This made our Lord’s blood vulnerable to the spear thrust after physical death.

First, the body cools off.

Secondly, rigor mortis begins to occur, which means His body became rigid in that forward position.

Third, the blood in the ventricles begin to coagulate, and the various components of the blood starts to layer out.

The platelets and serum especially looked like water, HUDOR to John, and the blood clots looked like HAIMA.

For most of His blood was still in His body and was not released until after His physical death by piercing of the Roman spear.

When the blood in the corpse separated into its parts, it was proof that our Lord did not bleed to death.

Repeat it was proof, evidence!

Autolysis = the blood layering out into its component parts or the breakdown of the cells.

FACT CHECK – Jesus did not bleed to death, even though He may have bleed excessively; from the scourging, beating, other piercings.

The literal blood of Christ refers to His physical death on the cross once His work was finished.

Eph 1:7, “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace.”

John 19:35 “And he [the apostle John] who has seen the water and the blood has testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth so that you also may believe.”

John 19:36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN.”

John 19:37 And again another Scripture (fulfilled) says, “THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.”

1Pe 1:20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you

1Pe 1:21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

His Royal title, “King of Kings, Lord of lords”; without which we could not become the body of Christ, the Church, and the Royal Family of God!
