God has done some amazing things - and we have had some amazing things happen to us these past few weeks - and for those who may not have heard this Sundays offering discussion, -- we mentioned how we will soon have unlimited space for our website which means that we can have our many thousands of doctrines available at no charge throughout the world at a click of the button.
A lot of times we take advantage of the message of grace, eternal security, and the mystery doctrines,
- but there are a lot of people, - God’s children out in some of these 3rd world countries and they are starving for the word of God.
So let’s not take advantage of anything and let’s remember that God is still at work in each and every single one of our lives and I have to say for me it is a privilege to walk the good fight of faith beside each of you.
Remember this and I love how the NIV puts it:
1CO 2:9 "However, as it is written: 'What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived' -- the things God has prepared for those who love him--"
That’s why we are excited and grateful for all that God is doing in our lives and all that He is doing through this ministry for the lives of His children around the world, - in spite of what satan and the kod try to do.
That’s why the apostle Paul said in:
2CO 13:8 "For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth."
And that’s why we are here, -- to do more work and more things for the church of God -- and that is exactly what we are going to be bringing out in these next few messages…
So let’s keep putting one foot in front of the other and filling in the gap so - that - we - can be used to glorify our merciful eternal God and Father.
With all that in mind if you would like to turn your bibles this evening to the gospel of John, or I will have the scriptures on the board here for you to follow along as well.
Tonight we will begin by noting the Sixth Saying of our Lord from the cross, - which has to do with that word “Tetelestai, it is finished” -- and it’s interesting how the Holy Spirit brings all this together,
-- because we are going to begin finishing (or closing out) our 29 Prophecy Fulfillment study with that word or phrase “Tetelestai, it is finished”
-- However, we are going to see that just like with the “I thirst” statement and the vinegar wine prophecy, -- that there is just so much more meaning to this action and we will also see this in a similar two-fold way.
You will definitely know what I mean by this statement once we get to the end of these 3 messages.
Tonight we are going to see: Why our Lord said “it is finished”, and how that relates to the foretelling of these many prophecies we have been noting.
And so in JOH 19:29, we read there was JOH 19:29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon {a branch of} hyssop, and brought it up to His mouth.
JOH 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.
Now, first of all, it’s very important that we don’t miss out on these principles - so - we have a little repetition for us here: There were actually two times that they tried to give our Lord wine, one time He accepted it, the other time He did not.
And the question we should all have is why?
Why did He accept it one time and rejected it another time?
The answer is that one time He was fulfilling a prophecy found in the Word of God, Psa 69:21, which was to receive the wine.
As we have noted recently - the other time referred to the fact that It was customary for the friends of the persons who were being executed to give them "wine mingled with myrrh," in order to deaden their pain and sufferings.
But He would not drink of it, - because He would not do anything that would have a tendency to diminish His sufferings.
So - one time He rejects it because as we have noted already, the work was not yet completed.
This was the time - before - the 3 hours of judgement.
And so, He would not do anything that would interfere with His calling in the plan of God and that wine mixed with the pain medication gall - would have deadened His pain making His payment not fully complete.
And then we noted at the second time He was offered the wine – He had just came out of those 3 hours of darkness, - judgement for the sins of the world, -- and:
He reveals to us that He is thirsty because of the fact that He was separated from God the Father and thirst represents the result of sin.
So in essence, - He drinks the wine this time - as a result to show us that He has quenched our thirst for us - so that we do not have to thirst eternally -- and we know that All we have to do is accept Him, - the Messiah, - the Son of God, - Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior to have this eternal thirst quenched.
We showed you these principles through the gospel of John and Matthew, and now we are going to see it through the eyes of Mark 15:23
As MAR 15:23 And they tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.
For when, in His last moments, He said, "I thirst," the cruel soldiers, wishing only to mock him, and amplify His sufferings were simply trying to diminish His sufferings to try to discredit what He was going through for them. -- Remember He didn’t just go through this suffering for His own people - but for the sins of the entire world.
The point here is that Our Lord was too focused on His PPOG for His life and His calling - to fall into this temptation.
And many of us can identify with temptation and the deception and betrayal that our Lord was going through for the very ones that were mocking and betraying Him.
It’s amazing how often many of us have experienced, - and still do experience, the fact that - some individuals give the impression that they are with you and by your side, - only to find that they were deceitful - with their so-called support.
And then - we tend to find it shocking when it happens -but we shouldn’t find it shocking,
because remember what David wrote in PSA 41:9, when talking about Judas Iscariot, he made this statement:
PSA 41:9 Even my close friend, in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Liars, liars!
In fact, PSA 55 David brought this out, in PSA 55:12, where David warns us about close friends and the ones that we can trust-in - at times - but who lie - and they live in lies – why? because they follow John 8:44 the father of all lies…
David made this statement in:
PSA 55:12 For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear {it}; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him.
It’s good to know your enemies at times - because many times - you could actually just hide from them…
-- but always remember once your enemies are out of your way - there is another whole group of new enemies -waiting to get at you again…
so sometimes you’re better off having them remain in your life - because at least you know who they are…and you can stand tall in front of them - and you can operate as a first class child of God - with integrity and virtue - and treat them with love, - and take advantage of these opportunities to glorify God through the very temptations andor challenges - that try to take you away from the plan of God,
-- they could be a distraction from the kod or they could actually be a test from God because He finds you worthy, like He did His son Job, worthy enough - to give us these challenges and opportunities so that we can grow, - experientially as well, - in His grace and knowledge - to become a spiritually mature believer - and reach that final stage of spiritual adulthood to ultimately glorify Him!
Now, back to PSA 55 – we see David makes this statement very clear in the next verse 13: PSA 55:13 But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend.
And then David – still speaking here of the very ones who had sweet fellowship together in verse 14: PSA 55:14 We who had sweet fellowship together, Walked in the house of God in the throng.
Another words they were: Liars - simply liars.
Our Lord was always and so are we surrounded by liars.
In fact, - He warned us about this - because - He said it’s a part of the spiritual life, - to get used to the fact that whether you like it or not, we are going to be surrounded by people who are going to lie. It’s just a fact of life!
Look what He said in John 15:
JOH 15:18 - Here is where our Lord gives us the shock treatment, - the shock treatment is DON’T BE SHOCKED.
That’s what He wants us to learn, don’t ever be shocked, -- the day that you wake up and your no longer shocked by what has happened in your life - or by what people have done to you or those that you love, - is the day that you have taken a giant step in living the spiritual life –
because our Lord said this in JOH 15:18 "If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before {it hated} you.
JOH 15:19 "If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
JOH 15:20 "Remember the word that I said to you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
JOH 15:21 "But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
So One time when He received the wine, He was fulfilling the prophecy of David, "In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink (Psa 69:21).
One of the most incredible amazing points that Pastor has taught us over the years is the fact that After He said “it is finished”, He was still not finished with fulfilling the will of God.
When He said “it was finished,” - He was referring to the payment of salvation – but, He was not finished fulfilling the will of God.
He said there was still other things I have to do - even after - the work on the cross, -- part of that was fulfilling prophecy.
One time He was fulfilling prophecy of David, however
when the Lord said “it is finished” - He was saying everything that the bible said about Me and My cross, - I have completed, I have finished, I have brought to a place of total perfection, you can trust in that.
So In one of His statements - He was saying in my thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink, fulfilling prophecy of Psa 69:21 - the other time He was simply trying to tell them that the work was finished.
And so The Sixth Saying of the cross, “tetelestai,” or “it is finished” can be described by one word: VICTORY.
Who’s victory?
The Victory is ours, - it belongs to us CAB, - it is our victory now - and it will always be ours forever and ever --and we need to recognize and understand that:
WE HAVE THE VICTORY!
And Having the Victory means having that PHI 4:13 attitude - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
And Having the Victory means having that JOH 8:32 attitude: you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'"
And Having the Victory means that you know all things work together for good for those who love Him, having that ROM 8:28 attitude.
That entire verse goes on to say ROM 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
We have the victory - and our victory - is manifested by our love towards God.
When the Lord Jesus Christ uttered the word tetelestai, the perfect, passive, indicative of teleo, He revealed the fact that the work of salvation was totally complete or finished.
The perfect tense means that - He finished it in the past, - with the result that – it goes on being finished forever, - the passive voice means - we receive the action of the work being finished - because He already did all the work for us - and the indicative mood says - this is a dogmatic statement of fact.
So, again The perfect, passive, indicative of “teleo” means that He revealed the fact that the work of salvation was totally complete or finished.
We should love that! And here’s why: the day after we are saved - sometimes we may wonder - why doesn’t God just take us to heaven right after we are saved?
The day, or the moment, - that we receive salvation, the day that we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, - why doesn’t God just say – “okay, now you’ve fulfilled My will, My will was so that none of you would perish, now come to heaven” it’s finished, your saved….
The answer to that is: - Because the work of salvation was not complete in the sense that - God - still wanted us to do more after we were completely and totally convinced that the work was finished, not more work for salvation – because that is totally completely finished -now He wants us to fulfill the personal sense of destiny He has for all of us.
So the moment that we are saved is the beginning of our spiritual life, -it is not the end in completion, that moment - is the beginning of your personal sense of destiny.
This is a great message for anyone who doesn’t understand the finished work of salvation and anyone who thinks they have to add to the work of salvation.
So - after salvation, - now you have to realize that there is finished work that God has called us to fulfill, - we need to learn it and enjoy it, - and then we will have a life that staggers the imagination…
We will have - a life that we won’t feel sorry for ourselves, - or get involved with self-pity, - we won’t feel like we’re a victim of the world, -- but instead – we will feel like we are a privileged child of God - who has the opportunity to serve and honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as never before.
So, - you see for years - we have thought that when He said “it is finished” - that He meant - that He had fulfilled the entire plan of God, and He did as far as the payment of sin was concerned, but there was more for Him to fulfill even after that.
However, He still had some more prophecies to fulfill, like Psa 69:21; and Psa 31:5.
Psa 69:21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Psa 31:5 Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth.
So, It is true that the work for salvation was totally complete and finished but He had not totally completed the principle of fulfilling the will of God until He fulfilled the prophecies about Him after He died on the cross.
The application: It is true that the work for salvation in our lives is totally complete, totally finished but God is not done with you and I. That’s the beginning of our lives…now we have a PPOG that He designed for us in eternality past that we are to learn to live in.
And how do we do that? –By taking in the word of God daily!
We are to walk in those good deeds that He ordained for you to walk in EPH 2:10 before the foundation of the world.
So once your totally convinced about salvation, - now the principle is how are you going to fulfill His will and walk in the PPOG?
- Which you cannot fulfill unless you first of all, know what the will of God is all about.
- And to do that - we need to operate in what is called - humility and discipline.
And that is totally and completely awesome - because it tells us that - There is life beyond salvation!
This is an awesome life, that comes with a perfectly complete personalized PPOG for your life - and it’s a life that you are now a soldier in the greatest army to ever exist and guess what – we have already won the victory!!! We already have the victory!!! And here is the best part: The victory CANNOT ever be taken away!!!
Now I have three passages for us to: Remember why He came.
- Q. Why did He come? A. To do the will of God: JOH 4:34, He said My food or nourishment is to do the will or the pleasure of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work.
- . Q. Why did He come? A. To do the will of God: JOH 5:30, He said I do not seek or consult My own will or I have no desire to do what is pleasing to Myself, My own aim, My own purpose but only the will and pleasure of the Father Who sent Me.
- . Q. Why did He come? A. To do the will of God: JOH 6:38 "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Not to do the will of Sam, or the will of John, or the will of Pastor Bob, but to do the will of God!
This shows us that our lives are just beginning from the completion of His work.
That gives our life meaning, - purpose - and definition.
That makes our life exciting, -- after salvation your life has just begun.
Now it gets exciting, -- especially in light of the fact that - you already know that - you have the victory - and now you’re going to live - for thee God - in the midst and the realm of the angelic conflict.
The writer of Hebrews said in HEB 10:7 says "Then I said, 'Behold, I have come {In the roll of the book it is written of Me} To do Thy will, O God." - Were back to - the will of God that He was occupied with - after He finished the work of salvation.
Which means that - after you and I learn how to pick up our cross, like He picked up His - and we learn to deny ourselves and live for others, - as did He, - and live like Him and - for Him, - that is - the beginning of us - fulfilling the will of God in our life, and the will of God is to please Him.
And then ultimately, I love: LUK 22:42, He said I have come not to do My own will, but the Father's."
Why are you here?
Why am I here?
Why did we come to bible class tonight?
Why did you come to this YouTube or this podcast?
What do we do with our time, talent and treasure?
Our spiritual gift?
Or maybe - what is the reason that we don’t go forward?
Am I here to do God’s will - or my own?
That’s why I love Luke 22:42 because LUK 22:42, even our Lord said He was not here to do His own will but the will of the Father.
Please note that - in all these passages, - our Lord said that He came to fulfill the will of “someone else”, - that is God the Father.
And it’s not until we recognize that - and we determine --that is how - we should live our lives, - that - then our lives - will have meaning.
For our life to have meaning in the PPOG - we have to know the answer to the question - what does God want me to do?
After salvation what?
After salvation is when life begins - and we learn the word of God, - you learn the principles of why we are here,
- learn the mystery doctrines of the church age,
-the principles of PMA of bible doctrine,
- the 10 PSD,
- you learn how to glorify God in the realm of the angelic conflict
- and you keep your mind off yourself - and what your going through, - and you set your mind - on the things that are above - not on the things of this earth, - and those things above - will be your treasure in heaven that you are living for, - once you learn these principles - so -that - we - can - walk in a manner worthy of His perfect plan.
Because you are now a child of God --who has a meaning behind the reason that you wake up every morning - and why you are alive, - and why you do the things that you do…
- And that one reason is stated in REV4:11:
REV 4:11 "'Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.'"
We give Him all the glory - and all the honor - and all the power -- because we now know - that Through Him we have the VICTORY!
For He deserves it, does He not?
--- Because He gave us the victory, -- we can now, in turn, - give Him the honor and the glory…
we can give Him the same honor and glory that He has also given to us -- to give to Him --- because - He has created all things - included - and especially - His own will!
He deserves it!!! Oh and by the way where are we to glorify God? In our bodies…
So, let’s now use a part of our bodies and give Him something else, let’s give the Lord a handclap right now!!!
And therefore in all these passages, when He said "tetelestai, meaning it is finished, there were still at least two more prophecies He needed to complete or fulfill.
Or in JOH 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty."
What did He desire to fulfill? The scripture.
What should we desire to fulfill?
The scripture -- and one thing the scripture said about His life was
PSA 69:21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
He fulfilled it or finished the will of God when He said "I am thirsty."
As JOH 19:28 says in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I am thirsty."
And He was also fulfilling:
PSA 31:5 Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth.
And by the way one writer brings out, -- and this is a fantastic principle, - this was the last thing, - the last record of what He said on the cross.
And really - the apostles record for us the first half of this “into Thy hand, I commit My spirit” - but if we quoted the whole verse – the last word He would have said are “You have ransomed me, O Lord, God of doctrine” –
Doctrine would have been the last word our Lord uttered on the cross if that statement was quoted complete as recorded…
And don’t forget Mark was not at the cross, it was the apostle John, - whom Jesus loved, right, -- and get this—it was the “women” who told the other disciples what had taken place at the cross…
So this is what my dad and our Pastor has taught us and continues to teach us… and he believes and he teaches us that the last word our Lord uttered on the cross was DOCTRINE! DOCTRINE! DOCTRINE! DOCTRINE!
Why? Because it is the only truth that sets us free!
Therefore His mission on earth was totally and completely done or finished but that was not really the absolute truth.
There was more for Him to do, -- His mission on earth when He became a member of the Human race - was to die for the sins of the whole world,
--- but after that He was raised from the dead, -- He ascended into heaven, -- He was seated at the right hand of God the Father –
-- and then He said - now I’m going to leave MY people down on earth as ambassadors for Me - and they are going to represent Me, - because My work is still not finished,
-- I have millions and millions of people - that I want to evangelize, - that I want to save and - and I’m going to use My people to do so –
That is why we have our doctrine made available to people who desire it - without a charge on it - so people can have the truth without worrying about whether or not - they have the ability or the finances to do so…
And that is also why - there will always be an attack on any grace ministry that is doing things God’s way, - fulfilling the will of God, --
and that is exactly what is happening behind the scenes, --so don’t be (as dad would say) a sucker.
-- Don’t let the lies deceive you and miss out on God’s highest and best.
So, "It is finished" means that He evidenced the fact that salvation was totally complete.
And I say The work was complete because on the day of our Lord's crucifixion, all the prophecies concerning His suffering were fulfilled in every detail, - which was a lasting testimony that Jesus truly is the Messiah.
Concerning His suffering these prophesies are fulfilled in every detail, - we are not talking about fulfilling His future after His suffering.
We are talking about the prophecies that were fulfilled in order that - there could be NO denying - that Jesus Christ is the Messiah.
And how many prophecies were there that were fulfilled?
There are many but we are going to go over the 29 of them that we have been studying - and I will do as many of them that we can squeeze in tonight and then we will finish the rest of them up probably on Friday & Sunday.
So bear with me - as we go over these briefly, as we have already gone into great detail with most of them:
- The first prophecy, the oldest of all, had been given by God at the time of Adam and Eve's sin.
What was that 1st prophecy? - That was when Adam and Eve both sinned in the garden.
GEN 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."
Notice the seed of a woman, - the seed of the Lord Jesus Christ through His mother Mary and then also us, - as we come into the world as a seed …
Here we are told that the serpent would bruise the seed of the woman. Did it happen? Absolutely.
Our Lord said He was going to actually crush the head of the serpent.
And by the way, - the serpent was going to bruise Him on the heel - because that was the only length that satan could get up to - because our Lord was going to be lifted up above the earth for the whole world to see…
We know this because:
This was fulfilled in JOH 12:31-33, "Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world shall be cast out.
JOH 12:32 "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself."
JOH 12:33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.
What happened when He was lifted up?
He was lifted up above the head of the serpent - and He crushed the serpent on the head.
The serpents head was were its venom or poison was.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, crushed satan’s poison, satan’s lies and deception. I told you I don’t even like to capitalize the name of this fallen angel…
Then there was:
- The betrayal of Jesus by Judas was foretold by David.
Our Lord finished the work on the cross.
Why?
Because He was betrayed by Judas and it was for told by David:
Prophesied: PSA 41:9 Even my close friend, in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
We have the statement, 2. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas was foretold by David.
Then we have the prophesy: Prophesied: PSA 41:9 Even my close friend, in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
And then we have the fulfillment:
Fulfilled: MAR 14:10 And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests, in order to betray Him to them.
MAR 14:11 And they were glad when they heard {this,} and promised to give him money. And he {began} seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.
-- Another prophecy that was fulfilled.
Then we have the 3rd one: 3. Jesus Christ would be forsaken by His disciples, as prophesied by Zechariah.
Prophesied: - ZEC 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate," Declares the Lord of hosts. "Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones.
That was fulfilled by the way, when all the disciples left Him: Fulfilled: MAR 14:50 And they all left Him and fled.
More prophecy of the fact that the work was finished.
I hope you’re getting the set-up of this message so far.
Already we’re getting a glimpse of the finished work in process here with all of these prophecies.
Then we have 4. The price of His betrayal was also foretold by Zechariah. Prophesied:
I know that many of these are familiar to us, but as pastor would say:
Don’t get familiar! -- I think he even has a whole doctrine on familiarity too!
This was prophesied in: Prophesied ZEC 11:12 And I said to them, "If it is good in your sight, give {me} my wages; but if not, never mind!" So they weighed out thirty {shekels} of silver as my wages.
Come on - we got to get excited here, - the work is finished and its right before our eyes!!!
We have the victory!!!
Learn these prophecy principles…
Learn it -- Know it -- and this is how you witness - and become a part of the plan of God - after your totally convinced of what happened at salvation.
And how do we know that this actually happened:
Because it was Fulfilled in total accuracy: MAT 26:15 and said, "What are you willing to give me to deliver Him up to you?" And they weighed out to him thirty pieces of silver. and of course, this was Judas asking here.
I also love how DJK brought out the fact that these religious leaders obviously didn’t know their scrolls..
Next we have 5. Then Zechariah also foretold what would be done with the betrayal money.
You see - our Lord didn’t just tell us how much the money was going to be, - the betrayal price.
No, - He doesn’t just stop there - He also tells us - what they are going to do with it:
Prophesied: ZEC 11:13 Then the Lord said to me, "Throw it to the potter, {that} magnificent price at which I was valued by them." So I took the thirty {shekels} of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the Lord.
Now was this Fulfilled? Yes it was in MAT 27:3-7
We call this the potter’s field in the book of Acts – this is where Judas Iscariot hung himself - and then his guts actually went hanging to the ground - because his guts flowed out.
Fulfilled: MAT 27:3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
MAT 27:4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See {to that} yourself!" huh, where’s his friends now…
MAT 27:5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
MAT 27:6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood."
MAT 27:7 And they counseled together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers.
Another prophecy of “it is finished” being fulfilled.
Isaiah talks about Him being a lamb to the slaughter in
#6: 6. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus Christ would be sacrificed as the Passover Lamb of God. Prophesied: "He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter." (Isa 53:7).
This was fulfilled according to Paul in 1 Co. 5:7: Fulfilled: 1Co 5:7, "For Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us;"
These things are exciting to us - and you’ll see why when we get to the end of this study.
One of the things we are actually going to be doing is adding all 29 of these prophecy and fulfillments to our book -Do You Believe The Bible Is The Word Of God - that book my dad wrote many years ago.
Look at how 1st Peter 1 reveals - Christ as our Passover Lamb:
1PE 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
1PE 1:19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. Unblemished and spotless the blood of Christ.
1PE 1:20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you
Another fulfillment of the fact that the work on the cross was finished.
#7 7. Isaiah also prophesied the scourging and mocking that He would suffer.
And He would go through a lot of this, - we have definitely seen plenty of this throughout our study.
Prophesied: ISA 50:6 I gave My back to those who strike {Me,} And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.
Notice it was: Fulfilled: MAT 27:26-30. The work was finished.
MAT 27:26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified.
MAT 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole {Roman} cohort around Him.
MAT 27:28 And they stripped Him, and put a scarlet robe on Him.
MAT 27:29 And after weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they kneeled down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
MAT 27:30 And they spat on Him, and took the reed and {began} to beat Him on the head.
Isaiah and David prophesied that Jesus' body would be totally mutilated.
They both - prophesied the humiliation of the mutilation -of our Lord’s physical appearance.
Isaiah prophesied here and the fulfillment took place in the gospels Prophesied: ISA 52:14 Just as many were astonished at you, {My people,} So His appearance was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men.
And that work was finished again by the work of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross.
Number 8: 8. David would also prophesy His physical abuse, PSA 22:17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me;
They - referring to the bones in our Lord’s human body,
He could actually see His bones through His physical human body.
Fulfilled in another passage of the finished work: Fulfilled: MAT 27:26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified.
That word scourged means that His body was literally physically destroyed so much so that He could see His guts on the inside of His body among all else He was going through.
#9 9. David prophesied the shame and dishonor that Jesus would suffer, being condemned as a criminal.
David said there is going to come a time that the Messiah would be shamed and dishonored as a criminal prophesied in PSA 69:9, 19 & 20.
Prophesied: PSA 69:9 For zeal for Thy house has consumed me, And the reproaches of those who reproach Thee have fallen on me.
PSA 69:19 Thou dost know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor; All my adversaries are before Thee.
PSA 69:20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am so sick. And I looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for comforters, but I found none.
Fulfilled: MAT 26:55 At that time Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me.
And they answered and said something, - they said that He is deserving of death in MAT 26:66!
MAT 26:66 what do you think? "They answered and said," He is deserving of death! "
That was Him being treated like a threatening criminal robber, - and again in front of the multitudes - who had come out with swords and clubs to arrest Him …
- There would also be cruel and lying witnesses against Him. Which we studied recently.
There was a statement being said within the word of God about lying cruel witnesses -- and we know that - because it was prophesied by David in:
Prophesied: Psa 35:11 "Cruel witnesses rose up; they asked me of things that I knew nothing about."
They were liars!
Fulfilled: Mar 14:55-57.
Found in Mar 14:55 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death; and they were not finding any.
MAR 14:56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, and {yet} their testimony was not consistent. Of course it wasn’t because as the prophecy says they were liars.
MAR 14:57 And some stood up and {began} to give false testimony against Him, saying,
- And then they lie and quote the false testimony against our Lord, -- but None of that stops Him from fulfilling the finished work on the cross, or from fulfilling His personal sense of destiny in the PPOG.
Then we have - Isaiah prophesied in #11 11. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would not make an effort to defend Himself at His trial.
He said - He will not - make an effort to defend Himself.
There was a time for Him to talk - like when He rebuked the Pharisees in MAT 23, and then at the time of His trial - He would not speak.
Why?
Because He was finishing the work that His father had called for Him to do.
--And we are to be imitators of Him - and keep moving forward to finish the race as well…
And we read in Isaiah as Prophesied: Isa 53:7 "He was oppressed, and He was afflicted; yet He opened not His mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before its shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth."
This was fulfilled in Fulfilled: MAT 27:13 Then Pilate *said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"
What did our Lord do?
MAT 27:14 And He did not answer him with regard to even a {single} charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.
- Isaiah also foretold Jesus Christ's crucifixion as the sin offering for the world.
We know that because it was:Prophesied: ISA 53:4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
ISA 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well‑being {fell} upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Who is healed? According the word of God in ISA 53:6 -ALL OF US!
ISA 53:6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
This of course was Fulfilled: JOH 19:16-19.
I hope your getting all of this, -- these are my dad’s principles, -- our pastor teachers own message.
-- And I for one know - that he has worked tirelessly and endlessly, and he is still working tirelessly in his own temporary diminished condition, --
-- And you know what, -- we just can’t take these doctrines for granted!
As long as God is willing to use a DLG, like myself, -- I will honor my earthly father -- and I will honor my eternal Father -- and I will do everything I am capable of doing - - to see to it - that these principles get out - to this lost and dying world, -- and shame on me if I don’t!!!
Sorry, I’ve been listening, over and over, - to my dad teach this message back in 2014, -- and he has so many awesome principles in it.
Among them -- he says something - that I kind of want to quote – word for word,
-- but, - first – I have to tell you that this one message took him - 3 full days to prepare for us and this was back in 2014 –
and in it, - he goes on to say something that really hit me between the eyes,
- he makes it known that - it was a lot of work, - and that he is not bragging, well… trying not to brag, -
So, - he says he is not bragging here - but –
-- that he is just proud about the fact that - the information is there - for him to study - so that he can give it you and I - to enjoy –
-- so that we can turn around, -- and give that same information - to others -- so that they can enjoy - the doctrine - that you have learned - because of your faithfulness - to the Lord Jesus Christ -- and understand that when He said - the work was finished on the cross - that was for salvation…
- But - your - life - really just began - and now it’s time for you - to understand, to know, to be confident - and to be able to relay - the finished work of salvation –
- So - that – you – can - become a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, - so that you can become an active soldier in the army of God,
- so that you can know the truth - and if the truth doesn’t set you free, - at least let it set others!!!!!!
Now our # 12th prophecy is, - in my opinion, - a very impactful prophesy.
So - I don’t want to lose your attention - and this will probably be our last passage - in conclusion to our first part of this 3 part message:
- Isaiah also foretold Jesus Christ's crucifixion as the sin offering for the world. Prophesied: ISA 53:4-6; Fulfilled: John 19:16-19.
JOH 19:16 So he then delivered Him to them to be crucified.
JOH 19:17 They took Jesus therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
JOH 19:18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
JOH 19:19 And Pilate wrote an inscription also, and put it on the cross. And it was written, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
As we close, I just want to remind you - to keep in mind - the power behind all of these prophecies.
God assures us of this in 2PE 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
It could have come in NO other way.
The problem is that "the God of this world [that is, the devil] has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (2Co 4:4).
In those mysterious three hours when the sun hid its face and a strange darkness covered the whole land, Jesus cried out those terrible cries, "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" {Mat 27:46}.
And then With the phrase (It is finished), our Lord uttered the truth of the gospel of our redemption, and that all that was needed for man's salvation had been accomplished on the cross.
This attitude should characterize every follower of Christ.
The mind that was in Him must be in us (PHI 2:5) -- it must be our meat, our spiritual food and the strength of our life.
TO DO THE WILL OF GOD IN ALL THINGS, AND TO FINISH HIS WORK is the key statement behind this phrase and this study.
In every case, we should find the strength to perform our duty in Christ's words. “It is finished."
His finished work secured the victory over every enemy.
By means of faith, (2Co 5:7), we may apply these dying words of Christ on the cross, and find the power for daily living and dying (1Co 15:31) in the fellowship of the crucified Christ (Gal 2:20).
For in 1Co 15:31, we read "I die daily."
Therefore, we can agree with the apostle Paul when he says,
Gal 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.
Faith in what Christ accomplished on the cross will enable us to manifest in our daily life the spirit of the cross. (The Secret of the Cross).
Jesus took the vinegar (as a stimulant), though He had refused the drugged vinegar.
This word, "It is finished," is one word in the Greek.
According to the other accounts, Jesus "shouted with a loud voice, 'It is finished."
There is relief in that word.
The agony is over, - the terrible ordeal is finished.
But there is pride in this word as well.
The race is run, the work is completed, the enemy is defeated.
