Abraham reveals the importance of the application of doctrine, Part 2.

In the very same day, as God had said to him = P.M.A. of Bible doctrine.
a. Refusing to hear the teaching of the word of God on a consistent basis.
b. Hearing the teaching of Bible doctrine but refusing to metabolize it = the failure to convert gnosis into epignosis.
c. Metabolizing doctrine so that it exists in the soul but then refusing to apply the doctrine when needed.
“Lay aside the old self” - aor-mid-inf - apotithemi = to take off dirty cloths or soiled clothes.
The first part is negative, verse 22. The second part is positive, verse 24.
The old man is going to destruction. The new man is created brand new, exact opposites.
The old man is rotting under the power of lust. The new man is increasing under the power of God.
The old self is controlled by deceit. The new self is controlled by truth or doctrine.
Morality stops at the negative which is putting off the old man.
True Christianity goes forward to “put on the new.”
Manner - anastrophe = the OSN controlling the thought pattern of the individual through human viewpoint.
The old self is dead; he was crucified with Christ on the cross, ROM 6:6.
Pres-pass-part - phtheiro = to be depraved, to be a waste, to be corrupted, to be defiled.
The lust pattern of the sin nature includes: Power lust. Approbation lust. Social lust. Sexual lust. Chemical lust.
Monetary lust. Inordinate ambition, inordinate competition. Crusader lust, believer activism. Revenge lust. Criminal lust. Pleasure lust.
“And that you be renewed” - pres-mid-ind - ananeoo. Ana = again and again Neoo = to renew or restore. It means to renew and restore again and again.
“In the spirit of your mind” - pnuemati tou noos = the breathing of your soul.
The renewal comes not from having a human spirit and having a mind, but from the breathing of your mind through fellowship with God the Holy Spirit and the intake of Bible doctrine.
“Put on” - aor-mid-inf - enduo = to clothe the soul.
New self - kainos = new in species.
“Has been created” - aor-pass-part - ktizo = something completely new.
“Has been created” = the new man is created experientially through the inhale of the soul, taking in doctrine under the control of God the Holy Spirit.
In righteousness - en + locative - dikaiosune = by means of grace and justice.
“Holiness of the truth” - hosioteti tes aletheias Holiness = devotion or the observing of obligations. Aletheia = truth or doctrine “By means of devotion to the truth or devotion to doctrine.”
2CO 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves;
