How afflictions and adversity make us strong.

Sunday, September 15, 2002

Jacob depended so much upon his human strength and human power, that when it was taken away he was forced to rely on the power and wisdom of God.

The blessing he needed was to give him a change of nature, and an elevation of character, making him a better, truer, more trustworthy person.

Turn to PSA 51:1

Be gracious = to give him his discipline in installments, not only so he can bear his punishments but so that cursing can be turned to blessing.

His relationship with God is based upon the imputed righteousness which God gives every believer at the moment of salvation, not upon experiential righteousness.

Turn to HEB 4:9

Blot out - Qal imperative - machah = to wipe out, to wipe away.

He knows the doctrine of righteousness and how the justice of God judged those sins.

He knows the principle of - ISA 43:25 I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins.

Wash - piel imperative - kabac = a command by David for God to intensively cleanse and wash him from his iniquity.

HEB 4:16 Let us therefore boldly approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.

Thoroughly - hiphil imperative - rabah = a command, “be caused to wash me thoroughly.”

ACT 13:22 “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.”

Cleanse me - piel imperative taher = to clean, to purify, a command by David for God to cleanse and purify him intensively.

Know - jada = to acknowledge, to know, to recognize.

My sin is ever before me = for the next 10 years as he is receiving installment discipline he will be reminded of his sin.

The child dying will remind him of his adultery.

His daughter being raped will remind him of his seduction of Bathsheba.

His son being murdered by his brother will remind him of his murder of Uriah.

The Absalom revolution will remind David of his rebellion against God the Father.

Done - asah Evil - ra David manufactured evil from his seared conscience.

Justified - Qal future - tsadaq = to be just, righteous and filled with integrity.

David is facing the situation like a mature individual - he is not blaming anyone for his decisions.

In sin - chet - under the penalty of sin.

Hyssop was used in the cleansing of leprosy.

Clean - tahowr = a pure, unconfused right lobe. Confusion is one of the many indications of a believer out of fellowship with God.

Renewed - the piel imperative chadash = to repair and restore.

There are many imperatives or commands from David, and many of the verbs are put in the Piel stem or the stem of intensity.

Old Testament believers who received the Holy Spirit could lose the Holy Spirit as a matter of discipline, 1SA 16:13-14.

EPH 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed unto the day of redemption.

God selects men for His work on earth, not on account of their personal characteristics but on account of His mercy and choice.

Jacob wants to know Gods name and through the apparent denial of the minor request, deliverance from Esau, he is brought to sense his need of something far greater than he had thought at first of asking.
