Eze 1:5 Within it there were figures resembling four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human form.
Cherubim have some physical and occupational similarities to the Seraphim we noted in Isaiah 6.
Eze 1:6 Each of them had four faces and four wings.
Comparing scripture against scripture would lead us to believe this could be a literal description of, these distinct Cherub Angels.
Ezk 1:7 Their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf’s hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze.
This is giving us a description of something that appears like animal hoofs.
Eze 1:8 Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, 9 their wings touched one another; their faces did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward.
Eze 1:10 As for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man; all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle.
The four sided faces speak to the North, South, East & West and the endless power of God and His divine army.
The human face- speaks to intelligence and human communication.
The Lion face-is symbolic of great power.
The Bull (Ox) face- is the endurance of labor and servitude.
The Eagle face- is the ability to soar to great heights and piercing vision from great distances away.
Eze 1:11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies. 12 And each went straight forward; wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went.
Eze 1:13 In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was flashing from the fire.
Ezk 1:14 And the living beings ran to and fro like bolts of lightning.
Angelic beings often are described with an amazing light source within them.
Scripture always has deeper meaning and the descriptions of this chariot have meaning much like Noah’s Ark or the Tabernacle in its construction, it goes beyond just the structure itself.
The wheels joining these angels together, means a continued mobility. Touching the earth and able to lift above the earth- also going in all four directions, all speak to military readiness for distribution of God’s wrath or cleansing.
The obedience and accuracy of following a protocol and guidance of God the Holy Spirit gives us insight into the serious nature of these 4 Cherub Angels.
The book of Ezekiel was so rich with prophecy that in ancient times the Jewish men would not teach it to younger men (under 30). Many of the chapters spoke to God’s coming judgement against Israel and her enemies.
Ezekiel is witnessing visions that are so real that we get a sense that God is lifting a spiritual veil to show this prophet the angelic warfare or process of cleansing & justice, God will bring down upon a rebellious nation.
Ezk 9:1 Then He cried out in my hearing with a loud voice saying, “Draw near, O executioners of the city, each with his destroying weapon in his hand.”
Pĕquddah `iyr- Officers or guardians of the city
Ezk 9:3 Then the glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose loins was the writing case.
Ezk 9:4 The LORD said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”
Ezk 9:2 Behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his shattering weapon in his hand;
These are Cherubim who are part of a unit designed by our Lord for destruction and administering discipline.
Ezk 10:2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.
The four cherubs of the chariot of fire, Ezk 1, 9, 10, are high ranking noblemen who wear the coat of arms of their Lord. One officer is found in Ezk 1 at every wheel of the chariot of fire, a vehicle of judgment which the Lord Jesus Christ rides.
During historical disaster & divine discipline upon enemies of the Lord, these Cherubim administer the justice.
Ezk 41:18 It was carved with cherubim and palm trees; and a palm tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces,19 a man’s face toward the palm tree on one side and a young lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side; they were carved on all the house all around.
Rev 4:6 and before the throne there was something
like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.
Eyes or full of eyes in scripture would be pointing to great wisdom and spiritual maturity. This could also highlight a special ability these angels have and possibly more physical eyes than just two. (literal & symbolic)
Rev 4:7 The first creature
was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.
The military analogies begin to pile up as you study angels, therefore it is safe to say that Elect Angels and perhaps even fallen ones have officers with greater authority or power, also mid-level NCO’s & of course grunts.
