BIBLICAL PARENTING
Train Up a Child: Overview

Point One
Trust God to raise your believer children

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.//In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
PRO 3:5-6

Behold then the kindness (benevolence… chrestotes) and severity (apotomia… discipline…national or individual) of God; to those who fell (the carnal), severity…but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue (persist) in His kindness (chrestotes); otherwise you also will be cut off (picked up and thrown away…dead works). ROM 11:22

Point Two
Trust what the Word of God has to say about raising your believer children

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
HEB 4:12

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;//so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
2TI 3:16-17

IF YOU TRUST GOD…then you must also TRUST HIS WORD…

Point Three
Parenting is an assignment directly from God

Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.
PRO 22:6

If you parents…
VOLITION

Train up a child…
COMMAND
Curriculum?

In the way he should go…
THE PATH

Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
THE OUTCOME

Point Four
Parenting is entered into voluntarily

You have an obligation to prepare your children to enter society as contributors

Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.
PRO 22:6

IF YOU TRUST GOD…then you must also TRUST HIS WORD…

Point Five
Parenting is a relationship with a structure of authority

The Psychotic Stage
Childhood
The Betrayal Stage
Teens
The Recovery Phase
Adulthood

You’re the boss!
Parenting is not a popularity contest

He who spares the rod HATES his son…but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
PRO 13:24

My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD or loathe His reproof,//For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
PRO 3:11-12

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.//HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),//SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG
ON THE EARTH.
EPH 6:1-3

If children don’t obey,
they’re normal.

Point Six
Parents Fail…
Deal With It!

Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be (in) subject(ion) to the Father of spirits, and live (continue living the
spiritual life)?
HEB 12:9

For they disciplined us for a short time (during childhood) as seemed best to them (according to the wisdom they possess…in imperfection), but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.
HEB 12:10

Point Seven
Parenting is a curriculum…
Train Up a Child in What?

An Accurate Picture of God

Bible Doctrine as a
Way of Life

Divine Viewpoint Choices

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.//In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
PRO 3:5-6

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
DEU 31:8

Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.
ISA 30:18

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,//casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
1PE 5:6-7

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,//to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
JUD 1:24-25
