A Fish Story

…for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
MAT 12:40

“My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, Thou dost save me from violence.//I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; And I am saved from my enemies.
2SA 22:3-4

For the waves of death encompassed me; The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me;//The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.
2SA 22:5-6

In my distress I called upon the LORD, Yes, I cried to my God; And from His temple He heard my voice, And my cry for help came
into His ears.”
2SA 22:7

BIBLICAL PARENTING
Train Up a Child
to Know God as a Person

At the center of the Christian’s faith is a person…our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…

…and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory//obtaining as the outcome of your faith the
salvation of your souls.
1PE 1:8-9

If your kids are going to know God they must have an accurate picture of Him…

Unfortunately, because we live in his kingdom, our picture of God is
shaped by Satan,
the ruler of this world

We know that we are
of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
1JO 5:19

And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
REV 12:9

“By the abundance of your trade (the trafficking of slander against God) you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire.”
EZE 28:16

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
JOH 8:44

Let’s look at the picture of God being proposed by Satan…you and your children are
influenced by it…

One
God is an inflexible tyrant imposing His will, wanting everything His way, with too many mandates…

Two
God condemns us and is disappointed with us…

Three
God is waiting to take everything from us, and will withdraw rewards…

Four
God abandons us when we need Him the most…

Five
God tests us for the purpose of making us look inadequate…

Six
God is harsh, especially in the matter of discipline…

Seven
God is an “I told you so” God, the other shoe waiting to drop when we fail…

Eight
God is no fun…

Nine
God can’t bless us because we are so bad and we don’t deserve it…

Ten
God hates the way we waste His resources…

For your children to have an accurate picture of God, you must help them expose Satan’s lies with the truth

One
Is God is an inflexible tyrant imposing His will, wanting everything His way, with too many mandates?

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
GAL 5:1

Two
Does God condemn us and is God disappointed with us?

For we do not have a
high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
HEB 4:15

Three
Is God is waiting to take everything from us, and will God withdraw rewards?

When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.// I have been young and now I am old, Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken Or his descendants begging bread.
PSA 37:24-25

Four
Does God abandon us
when we need Him
the most?

“The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
DEU 31:8

Five
Does God test us for the purpose of making us look inadequate?

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
1CO 10:13

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
JAM 1:13

Six
Is God harsh, especially in the matter of discipline?

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
PSA 32:8

Seven
Is God is an “I told you so” God, “the other shoe” waiting to drop when we fail?

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.// For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear (respect) Him.
PSA 103:10-11

As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.// Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.// For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.
PSA 103:12-14

Eight
Is God no fun?

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us (the) all things?
ROM 8:32

Nine
Is God limited in His ability to bless us because we are so bad and we don’t
deserve it?

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or
shifting shadow.
JAM 1:17

Ten
Does God hates the way we waste His resources?

“And the Lord will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.”
ISA 58:11

Train up your children to have an accurate picture of God by using the truth. It will be the most important gift you can give them.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.//In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
PRO 3:5-6

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
DEU 31:8

Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.
ISA 30:18

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,//casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
1PE 5:6-7

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,//to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
JUD 1:24-25
