The Doctrine of the Incarnation part 3
Point 1: Definition and description. Point 2: Who became incarnate? Point 3: How did the Son become incarnate? Point 4: For what purpose did the Son become incarnate? At least 7 major reasons are disclosed for the purpose of the incarnation. 1. Christ became true humanity so that He might manifest God to man. The full revelation of the love of God is made tangible by the incarnation of Christ and all that He was through birth, life, and death at the Cross, where it was exhibited to its fullest. At the incarnation, Christ was also given the office of prophet, and a prophet brings the message of God to the people of God. 2. Christ became true humanity to manifest man to God. Whatever value mankind might place on the first Adam either before or after the fall, it is true that the last Adam is the all-satisfying ideal of the Creator. The God-Man is the One in whom the Father takes perfect delight. Matt 3:17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." (priestly office) Matt 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!"(prophetic ministry) Ps 2:6-7 But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘Thou art My Son,Today I have begotten Thee’. (office as King) The Lord Jesus Christ in hypostatic union completely satisfied the righteous requirement of God the Father and therefore all who are in Him have a solid ground to stand on in the presence of the Father. By virtue of being in union with Him we do not have the slavery of attempted perfection, we are perfect in Him and have the freedom of operating in grace. Through His mind, the written word, we have the ability to be like Him, the Living Word, in time. Phil 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 1 Peter 2:21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, ROM 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, EPH 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ. 3. That He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest. As Priest Christ is seen as man’s representative to God in sacrifice and in behalf of imperfection in the human sphere. Christ was unique as the God-Man, and the “blood of Christ” was efficacious to God. It is the function of the priest to make an offering for sin. Christ, as Priest, offered Himself without spot to God as the only true offering for sin. 1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. Therefore Christ, in another display of His uniqueness, was Himself the sacrifice and the Sacrificer. Christ therefore, through the incarnation, becomes the Priest for sacrifice, is Himself the sacrifice, and continues to represent mankind to God as our High Priest. 4. That He might destroy the works of the devil. The strategic victory of Christ on the Cross in efficacious spiritual death broke the back of satan and his rebellion against God’s Righteousness and Justice. John 12:31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world shall be cast out. John 16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. COL 2:15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. 16. The sneaky snake makes false accusations and remember that those who make accusations and judge others are usually guilty of the very thing they judge others for, ROM 2:1. 5. That He might be Head over the new creation. The Church-age is the dispensation of the calling out of the body of Christ, of which He is the head. This never before seen union between God and man is commissioned as the Royal Family of God with all the unique assets that such a family would include by necessity. ROM 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. EPH 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, 1 Cor 12:21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." Phil 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; Phil 3:21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself. 6. That He might sit on David’s Throne. Luke 1:32 "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; Luke 1:33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end." The many prophesies concerning the fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant begins in 2SA 7:16. 2 Sam 7:16 And your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever. In Psalm 89:20-37 David again shows his understanding and faith in God’s promise to him. Ps 89:28-29 My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him. So I will establish his descendants forever, And his throne as the days of heaven. The incarnation is required that the King may sit on David’s throne. 7. That He might be the Kinsman Redeemer. A type is a prophetic illustration of a future person or event and that person or event, which is the fulfillment of the type is known as the antitype. A relative or a Kinsman could go to the slave owner or the one who acquired the land of his relative and pay the price for his relative or his land and thus buy it back for him. a. The redeemer must be a kinsman (LEV 25:48-49; Ruth 3:12-13). b. The redeemer must be able to redeem (Ruth 4:4-6; cf. JER 50:34). c. The redemption is accomplished by the redeemer, or goel, by paying the righteous demands (LEV 25:27). The entire work of redemption is for the lost who have no possibility of redeeming themselves. Redemption of the people of Israel from their slavery was enacted by Jehovah. a. The people of Israel were redeemed from Egypt wholly by Jehovah Ex 3:7,8). b. The redemption of Israel from Egypt was wrought by a person - Moses. c. The redemption of Israel from Egypt was wrought by blood (Ex 12:13, 23, 27). d. Israel was removed from Egypt by supernatural power. The Kinsman Redeemer was God, He was a man, His sacrifice was through His blood (substitutionary spiritual death). Acts 20:28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. Faith in Christ for salvation is made efficacious by the power of God the Holy Spirit. a. the redeemer must be a Kinsman. The Second person of the Trinity became a man at the incarnation thus making Him a kinsman of the entire human race. b. the redeemer must be able to redeem. Jesus Christ arrived at Calvary impeccable in hypostatic union and therefore was qualified as the God-Man to pay the price that would satisfy the Justice of God. c. the redeemer must be willing to redeem. One of the most vital revelations concerning Christ was His willingness to go to the Cross. John 10:17-18 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. 2 Cor 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, John 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." "to the East" is a preposition and a noun paneh, in the presence, in the face of in front of, against, or in defiance of his brethren.
