“search” is ereunao. It means to explore or to investigate something with which you are familiar. The Pharisees knew all sorts of little things but they had never investigated the scriptures to see the person there.
They assumed that they were saved by observing ritual and by physical birth, so they were guilty of sloppy, misconceived thinking.
In the active voice (to come) it indicates that every person must make his own decision and he must do it apart from any human coercion.
“unto me” – pros plus the accusative means “face to face with.” So in a point of time, when you believe in Christ, you come face to face with God.
“that” = purpose clause – that you may have zoe life, the life of God that the Lord came on an official delegation to give as a free gift to the human race.
By pointing out his own humility Jesus is hitting the religious crowd where it hurts the most. They are glory-grabbers.
Ginosko
You can’t love unless you can think properly, and you can’t love with God’s love unless you think like Him.
They have absolutely no capacity for the love of God and they live under the destructive power of self love.
Ability means that God provides the ability. He provides everything – the information, the fullness of soul, the volition, the mentality, the Holy Spirit making the gospel clear; He provides everything.
means to know from the experience of observation. I know you from eternity past with the result that I understand you right now.
The religious Jews seize and grab glory for themselves, but they are grabbing a false glory, the glory of human achievement, the glory of human ability, the glory of religiosity, the glory of a preconceived human system.
Their mutual admiration society is a society of darkness and in darkness they cannot believe.
John 1:5
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
ISA 9:2
The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
In verse 45-47 we have a final witness against them. Calling to the stand Moses, the greatest of the OT prophets and one for whom they had the highest respect.
Moses was one of the greatest witnesses of Christ. Deuteronomy 18, quoted by Peter in Acts 3:22 and by Stephen in Acts 7:37.
Acts 3:22
“Moses said, ‘The Lord God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed in everything He says to you.
Acts 7:37
“This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren.
NUM 21:8-9
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he shall live.”
NUM 21:9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
Leviticus chapters 1-6, the Levitical offerings, we have the teaching of the cross; in chapter 23, the holy days which was teaching concerning Christ. Exodus 12, the Passover, and in 1 Corinthians 5:7 Christ is our Passover.
