Florida Conference 2005, Part 1. The Church at Sardis. Pastor John Farley.

Friday AM, March 4, 2005.

Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia.

The city of Sardis was famous for the gold taken out of the Pactolus river which flowed through the city.

Sardis and Laodicea were the most wealthy churches and geographical locations in the ancient world.

Sardis “had a name that she lived and was dead.”

1TI 5:6 But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives.

Sardis was famous for other things – the Phallic Cult, the worship of sex and for the worship of the Pagan Goddess of the Cybele Oracle – the worship of nature.

1PE 4:10 “God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God’s many kinds of blessings.”

A special gift – “charisma” = an extraordinary power distinguishing certain Christians and enabling them to serve the church of Christ.

EPH 4:8 And He gave gifts to men.
Gifts – noun domata = gift; a present.

1TI 4:14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you,

1CO 12:7 But to each one is given for our benefit the manifestation of the Spirit for the benefit of the common good.

Your spiritual gift is just as important to the team as the next person’s because all the gifts are beneficial to the team.

This verse is a warning to all team members to avoid judging other team members with different spiritual gifts, often-invisible spiritual gifts.

Verse 22 – pres-act-part – dokeo = a subjective and critical system of thinking about someone else; a subjective or judging opinion, without facts, only prejudice.

By less honorable, Paul means that they do not receive the honor and the respect as visible gifts do.

It does not mean they are dishonorable, it means they do not receive any recognition.

COL 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

ECC 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, verily, do {it} with all your might;

“Less honorable” = they do not always receive the noticeable honor, except the greatest of all honor, that fantastic “Well done” from the Lord, and the future blessings they will have in heaven as rewards.

MAT 10:40 He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

MAT 10:41 “He who receives a prophet in {the} name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.”

MAT 10:42 “And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you he shall not lose his reward.”

Bestow – pres-act-ind – perititheemi = to clothe with more abundant honor, to put a hedge around someone, to invest in them, to build them up, to treat them with privilege.

This team was coordinated in heaven as a part of the doctrine of divine decrees in eternity past, EPH 1:4.

Billions and billions of years ago the Trinity decided that our Lord Jesus Christ would be the head of the church as our Savior, and God the Holy Spirit would provide whatever we were by way of members of the team, EPH 1:22, 1CO 12:11.

This is the greatest part of history, for this is the Church-age when everything is resolved with regard to the prehistoric angelic conflict.

The more abundant honor to the parts of the team that lacked = the team members who advance in the spiritual life, and they are part of a great invisible army.
