EXO 3:6 “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
The 12 tribes of Israel are beginning to be born; God is moving in spite of Jacobs sins not because of Jacobs sins.
Jacob is under discipline for being in the wrong geographical location and for taking two wives.
Her affliction is knowing that her husband truly loves another woman, her sister Rachel.
She named her first son Reuben - “behold a son.” He was the firstborn and should have received the birthright,DEU 21:15-17.
Reuben was the firstborn and should have received the birthright, but Reuben will forfeit this right by committing incest with one of Jacobs wives, GEN 35:22, Bilhah.
Simeon = “One who hears” or “God hears.”
Levi = to be joined or attached.
Judah = “let Him be praised” - she became the ancestress of David and our Lord Jesus Christ.
REV 5:5 He is the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David.
ACT 7:9 And the patriarchs became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. And {yet} God was with him,
Jealousy = fear, fear of losing anothers affection or love. Fear of rivalry. Fear of unfaithfulness.
“Morbidly Jealous Murderer.”
MAR 15:10 “For He [TLJC] was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over to the Romans because of jealousy.”
Disorder - akatastasia = instability, disorder, commotion, and confusion.
Jealousy, like many of the mental attitude sins, can produce physical sickness as well as mental disorder.
Jealousy is the worst of all the mental attitude sins because it is the strongest mental attitude sin, PRO 27:3-4.
Jealousy belongs to several categories of personal sinning: the arrogance complex of sins and the emotional complex of sins.
Arrogance complex of sins, jealousy will have one of the following reactions: bitterness, vindictive, implacable, inordinate ambition and competition, revenge motivation, or verbal sins.
a. The hysterical category of sins which includes fear - fear of rivalry, fear of losing someones affection, fear of unfaithfulness in some form - worry, anxiety, panic, consternation, irrationality, dissociation.
b. The hatred category - uncontrollable anger, implacable hatred, bitter resentment, implacable vindictiveness, loathing, animosity, tantrums, violence, murder.
c. The self-centered category which includes self-pity, emotional irrationality, certain expressions of dissatisfaction including gossip, slander, maligning, and other forms of vilification.
1CO 3:3 “You are still carnal because there is jealousy and strife among you. Are you not carnal? In fact, are you not walking on the basis of the standards of men [unbelievers]?”
1CO 13:4 “Virtue-love is not jealous.”
So great was the sin of jealousy in Israel that a special offering was made for it, NUM 5:11-31.
Jealousy actually split the nation Israel, ISA 11:13.
Jealousy is the basis for the destruction of category two love (personal love of a member of the opposite sex),SOS 8:6-7.
SOS 8:6 Jealousy is as severe as Sheol [or the grave];
Jealous people rejoice in the misery or fall of others.
Notice the domestic distractions that Jacob now must deal with because he refused to wait upon the Lord and upon the Lords timing.
Rachel was not satisfied with Jacobs love and attention; she wanted sons.
2CO 10:12 when they measure themselves by themselves, and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.
Jacob does what his grandfather Abraham did, GEN 16:4, he has sex with a slave girl and marries a third time.
Leah - 33 Rachel - 14 Bilhah - 7 Zilpah - 16
Once again human solutions enter into this family rather than trusting in the Lord.
Dan = judge or vindicator or He has vindicated me.
She thinks God is on her side and not her sisters and God has come through for her rather than Leah.
Naphtali = my wrestling or my struggle.
When Zilpah bore a son to Jacob, Leah considered it good fortune, and named the boy Gad, meaning “good fortune, fortunate.”
Asher = happy or fortunate.
More Christians value themselves and govern themselves more by reputation than by doctrine, what God thinks!
Belladonna, a beet-like root believed by the Orientals to be an aphrodisiac and possess the property of aiding conception.
Issachar = “he is a reward,” or “he will bring a reward.”
Zebulun = honor or exalted dwelling.
Dinah = justice or vindication.
In chapter 34 she was raped by Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, GEN 34:2.
GEN 37:35; GEN 46:7,15 - Jacob had other daughters as well!
