Who Is This Man Who Was Raised From The Dead? John 20

April 4, 2021

Every single knee shall bow and every single tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Good morning and Happy Easter to all though we call this day Happy Resurrection Sunday because this message is for all of God’s people a Happy Resurrection Sunday because it was during this week that Two Sabbaths and the Cross which took place on Wednesday Morning after a week of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It was during this time that our Lord was in the Garden and praying that the Cross might be taken away if it could not by His will but by the will of God, as well as a time when He sweat drops of blood for us and all who would believe.

Now, it is because of this that we say “Happy Resurrection Sunday.”

Also I would like to remind you all, whether you are a believer, or whether you are a visitor, or whether you are just here because of a friend who invited you here that you would at least have the good manners to give the message a hearing, especially if you are here for the first time.

Because I believe that what you are about to hear could change your life.

And so, let’s begin this part of the message with some questions such as Who is this one that said to be raised from the dead?

These are the questions you must ask yourself.

Or, Do you believe in God?

Do you believe that there is a God somewhere somehow?

If so, do you have a responsibility to at least listen to Him?

Do you owe Him a hearing?

If there really is a God, what does God want from your life?

No one can go through life saying I believe in God, yet ignore Him.

Many people that say they believe in God, really do not.

We know that because of something our Lord’s stepbrother James said in Jam 2:19  You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

To really believe in God you would have to realize that just believing in God doesn’t save you, even the demons believe that there is a God but that doesn’t save them.

God wants something from you or from all of us.

In fact, God expects something from you, Pro 23:26.

PRO 23:26   Give me your heart, my son, And let your eyes delight in my ways.

In fact, the Gospel of John deals with who Jesus Christ really is.

The Gospel of John is one of the most unique Gospels in that Matthew, Mark and Luke are very repetitious.

But, the Gospel of John is much different than the Gospel of Matthew, Mark and Luke.

John wrote his book after the other Gospels were already written.

The Holy Spirit wanted him to bring something out about Jesus Christ more than what any of the other Gospels did, even combined and that is the Deity of Jesus Christ.

The deity of Jesus Christ reveals who Jesus Christ really is.

Matthew, Mark and Luke do not tell us who Jesus Christ really is, it is only the apostle John that does that.

Now, many people will come up with excuses to not face who Jesus Christ is.

Most people will say things like, I don’t go to church because there are too many hypocrites there.

Well, I’m here to ask you a question, do you go to work?

There’s hypocrites there. Isn’t there?

Do you go to night clubs, what about the hypocrites that are there?

How about restaurants, there’s hypocrites there.

Let’s face it, there’s hypocrites everywhere.

And that’s another reason why the apostle John said in John 20:31  These have been written so that you may believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that Jesus is the Christ [the Messiah, the Anointed], the Son of God; and that by believing [and trusting in and relying on Him] you may have life in His name.

Now, this book was not written to condemn you.

Jesus Christ has already paid the price for every sin you would ever commit.

This book is written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that believing you might have life through His name.

A lot of people believe that Jesus Christ is the Son but a lot of people don’t keep on believing.

If you keep on believing then you’ll have life through His name.

The Gospel of John is a book that is basically written to unbelievers to cause them to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and then this book is also written to Christians to cause them to keep on believing that He is Lord and Savior so that they can have a life through His name.

Many people never learn to love themselves through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Why was the Gospel of John written?

So that we might believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that by believing we might have life through His name.

In this life that God wants us to have does not begin when we die and go to heaven.

We are not talking about eternal life in heaven we are talking about life right now on earth, this is why this Gospel was written.

Notice what the apostle John said in the first three verses of the Gospel he wrote, the Gospel of John.

JOH 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

JOH 1:2  He was in the beginning with God.

JOH 1:3   All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

In fact, speaking of His Word, notice what John says about Him being the Word.

This book is considered by many scholars to be the deepest and the most spiritual book in the Bible.

The main purpose for this book is to inspire you and I to have faith in Jesus Christ is the Son of God and to keep having that faith so that He’s not only Savior of your soul but He’s also Lord of your life.

What good is it if Jesus Christ is your Savior but He’s not your Lord?

A lot of people use phrases so that Jesus Christ will not have to be Lord of their life.

Consider making Jesus Christ Savior of your soul and if you’re already saved make Him Lord of your life.

Look at JOH 1:14   And the Word [Jesus Christ] became flesh [human] , and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

JOH 1:15  John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank or a [Higher title] than I, for He existed before me.'”

Speaking of our Lord John the Baptist says in JOH 1:29   The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

JOH 1:30  “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’

JOH 1:31  “And I did not recognize Him, but in order that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.”

JOH 1:32 And John bore witness saying, “I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

JOH 1:33 “And I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’

JOH 1:34  “And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

(Q) Many believers ask what is the Gospel?

This Gospel is designed for us to recognize the Celebrityship, the Kingship, and the Lordship of our Lord and that Jesus Christ is God!

(Q) Other people want to know if Jesus Christ is equal to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit?

The answer to that question is that you must realize that Jesus Christ is not just the Son of God but He is God Himself.

In fact, our Lord Jesus Christ used the same terminology that the Father used to describe Himself, we see this in the ten “I Ams.”

For example;

1) JOH 6:35, Jesus Christ said “I am the bread of life”.

2) JOH 6:41, He said “I am the bread who came down out of heaven.”

3) JOH 6:51, He said “I am the living bread”.

4) JOH 8:12, “I am the light of the world.”

5) JOH 8:18, “I am He who bears witness of Myself.”

6) JOH 10:7, “I am the door of the sheep.”

7) JOH 10:14, “I am the good shepherd.”

8) JOH 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

9) JOH 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

10) JOH 15:1, “I am the true vine.”

These ten “I Ams” of Jesus Christ represent the number of completion in the divine order.

In these verses Jesus Christ emphatically identified Himself as deity!

Many say Jesus Christ did not claim to be God. But yes… He did claim to be God! All through the book of John Jesus Christ was teaching that the unity of God consisted of three manifestations and He was one of them!

(Q) In attempting to prove that Jesus Christ is God you would first take your listener to GEN 1:1 and cross reference it with COL 1:16 and then onto JOH 1:1,14.

If you are dealing with a believer or non believer, you can ask them who is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega? They will respond that Jehovah is according to ISA 44:6.

You then take them to REV 1:17 in which Jesus Christ says He is the first and the last.

And REV 1:8 where Jesus Christ says He is the Alpha and the Omega.

(Q)  How do we know it is the Lord Jesus Christ speaking here, because of verse 18 in which He states …”the living One; and I was dead.”

Deity cannot die but humanity can.

The only member of the Trinity that was also humanity was the Son, Jesus Christ, cross reference this with REV 2:8.

  1. Q) What about those who ask if Jesus Christ is King and Jesus Christ is Lord is He the only celebrity in the Christian life?.

The fact that Jesus Christ is God demands your attention.

You will have to stand before God someday to answer to God.

So, in John 1:1  In the beginning [before all time] was the Word ([a] Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

The Word was in the beginning, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

The Word “beginning” means a beginning that has no beginning, and it means eternity past is the Word.

Now, if the Word of God is the word, then as much as you know about this book is as much as you know about God.

(Q) For example, God is omnipresent or everywhere present and that means that God’s entire mind is in the Bible.

JOH 1:14   And the Word [Christ] became flesh [human], and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory [His hypostatic union] as of the only begotten [Son] from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The same One who is equal to the Father and the Holy Spirit is the same one Who is occupied with the highest place of deity, and He decided to come down on earth and take upon Him the form of a man.

The main difference between Jesus Christ and His body is that He wasn’t born with a sin nature because His mother Mary was a virgin and the father passes down the sin nature.

(Q) Why did He come?

Jesus Christ came because you were the joy that was set before Him and He was willing to die in our place so that we could live forever together with Him.

The ultimate work has been done.

The only thing that matters now is MAT 22:42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?”

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done, if you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ you will have eternal life.

There is only one reason and one reason only why people go to hell and that is because they refuse to believe in the Son of God, nothing else.

(Q) Why did Jesus Christ who is God dwell among us?

2CO 8:9   For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Jesus Christ came to make poor people rich.

Look at what the word of God says in Phi 2:8  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Every single knee shall bow and every single tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

PHI 2:9  Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

PHI 2:10  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth,

PHI 2:11   and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Before we even talk about Him, Jesus is God.

He’s not like a God, and He’s not just a good teacher and He wasn’t just a good man, He is God in the flesh.

God inside the human body.

Unless you know that Jesus Christ you don’t know Jesus Christ at all.

Jesus Christ is God who is equal to the Father and who is equal to the Holy Spirit.

Who is the son of God that we love and learn so much about Him?

ISA 9:6  For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus Christ is the mighty God and there is no God mightier than Jesus Christ the son of God.

He who is “the everlasting Father” was born on the cross and He died just for you and me.

He who is called counselor was rejected by the wisdom of man.

He who is the Almighty God was crucified on the hill that He created to hang himself upon.

He could have said STOPED at any moment.

But because He knew that if He got out of suffering Himself, He would have to watch you and I suffer for eternity.

Jesus Christ had to be tempted just like you and I.

He had to know what it is like to live by Faith.

Jesus Christ had to deprive Himself of using his godly character so that He could be a perfect sacrifice for you and me.

The everlasting Father was a son Who had to learn obedience by the things that He suffered. Heb 5:8.

Heb 5:8  Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.

That’s what Jesus was, the everlasting Father or the Father of eternity.

Think about it.

He who was the prince of peace must suffer Himself the divine indignation and the wrath of God.

Why did he have to suffer the wrath of God?

Why did He have to be the one?

Because He was the only One that was perfect or He was a perfect sacrifice for imperfect people.

2CO 5:21  He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

And that is why Acts 16:31 says  “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.”

It may seem simple to you but what about what happened on that cross 2000 years ago but it’s not simple when you realize the price that was paid.

It wasn’t simple at all.

All the work has been done.

God’s way: You have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose.

Your way: You’ve got everything to lose and absolutely nothing to gain. Nothing.

Jesus Christ is the One who created all things.

Watch this and compare the scriptures.

In GEN 1:1  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

COL 1:16  For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities‑‑ all things have been created by Him and for Him.

The Holy Spirit is the One who “restores” everything, He doesn’t create.

In Genesis 1 the Holy Spirit moved upon the earth that was already there, the earth wasn’t created in Genesis 1:2 it was created in Genesis 1:1 and then the Holy Spirit has a ministry of restoration throughout the Bible and He restored the earth in one day.

Jesus Christ is the one who created all things.

The One who created all things held the world together while occupying an infants cradle; Heb 1:3.

Jesus Christ created all things.

He created His mother Mary and He created you and I.

Jesus Christ came to die and to be resurrected, so that all men could have eternal life.

Jesus Christ never sinned yet He became to worst sinner the world has ever seen just for you and just for me.

Because on His precious body was poured out the entire sins of the whole world.

Part of His judgement in Isaiah was hearing the words of His Father call out the sins of the world.

(Q) Why did Jesus do all of this?

Because He loves us, He loves you and He loves me.

The day that Jesus Christ died is much more important than the day that He was resurrected.

Because the resurrection was done by God the Father God the Holy Spirit but the death was done by the Son and if there was no death, there would never be a resurrection.

Think about it;  The One who is the bread of life Himself was hungry because of you and me.

In JOH 6:35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life;

The One who is a supernatural giver of that water we need so much  was thirsty for that water for you and me.

(Q) The One Who was dead is alive forever more. What’s His name?

The Lord Jesus Christ.

Who is He?

God, God in the flesh.

Jesus Christ said something very vital.

All roads do not lead to Rome.

There’s only one way to get to heaven and that is through Christ and Christ only.

John 5:23 so that all will give honor (reverence, homage) to the Son just as they give honor to the Father. [In fact] the one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who has sent Him.

To not honor Jesus Christ is to not honor God.

You cannot honor God unless you honor Jesus Christ. Why? Because Jesus Christ is God.

Do you know where the Son is dishonored today?

The Son is dishonored today because whenever we assign Jesus Christ a lower place than the Father, He is dishonored.

The deity of God the Father is not universally denied, except my fools who are atheist.

The Bible says that there are no atheists are in hell.

Do you know what that means?

Once they get into hell they realize that there is a God.

Why is it that people universally except the fact that God the Father is real but the Son is not equal to Him?

Because when the Son came down in the form of human flesh, people look at that as a lesser position than God.

Jesus Christ is Jehovah.

God the Father is Jehovah.

God the Holy Spirit is Jehovah.

When Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, it wasn’t God raised from the dead it was the man raised from the dead.

Jesus Christ was still in unity with the other two members of the Trinity.

Now the Scriptures are going to leave no doubt as to Who the Lord Jesus Christ is.

Jesus Christ is a physical manifestation of the invisible God.

Colossians 1:15 He is the exact living image [the essential manifestation] of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible], the firstborn [the preeminent one, the sovereign, and the originator] of all creation.

Hebrews 1:3 tells us He is the exact image of God.

Hebrews 1:3 The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s [a]Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority],

Jesus Christ is not like God, He is the exact image of God. Jesus Christ is God.

Colossians 1:16 For [a]by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and for Him.

Colossians 1:16 says

Jesus Christ is the creator of heaven and earth because Jesus existed before He came down on earth as a man.

Matthew 1:23  “Behold, the [a]virgin shall be with child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel”—which, when translated, means, “God with us.”

That’s who Jesus Christ is, He’s God with us.

Jesus Christ is God with us.

Is God with you today?

Is God with us?

What’s more important to you?

Your children that are with you, your wife that is with you, with your husband that is with you, your job with you, your security with you, or God with you.

Life is designed to take away the most precious things you have, the most precious.

People use reasons and excuses to not know who God is.

Is God really with you?

How important is God in your life?

John 20:28

John 20:26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, “Peace to you.”

John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe.”

John 20:28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God] are they who did not see [Me] and yet believed [in Me].”
