e. The fifth of seven salvation ministries of God the Holy Spirit, – the distribution of spiritual gifts which occurs at the moment of salvation.

Point 1. The Source of Spiritual Gifts which involves All Three Members of the Trinity.

a. God the Father, HEB 2:4.

b. God the Son, EPH 4:7-8.

c. God the Holy Spirit, 1CO 12:11.

Point 2. Definition and Description.

Charisma – = When you add the suffix “ma” it means receivers of grace.

Spiritual gifts are the sovereign decision of God the Holy Spirit given to every believer at the moment of salvation.

Tongues, interpretation of tongues, healings and miracles were all temporary spiritual gifts, that are no longer in existence today.

1CO 14:1 says Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

gifts – italics = not found in the original.

The word for spiritual is pneumatika which means spirituality or spiritual things.

It is spirituality and the cultivation of our own spiritual gifts that is in view here, not seeking after a particular gift.

“especially that you may prophesy” = you may speak by divine inspiration, it does not mean that you may foretell the future.

Whether you know what it is or don’t know what it is, it was given to you by grace at the moment of salvation.

Spiritual gifts are sovereignly given by the Holy Spirit to each believer at the moment of salvation.

1CO 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

When you object to your own or to someone else’s spiritual gift, no one earns or deserves a spiritual gift.

PRO 24:17-18, Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Lest the Lord see {it} and be displeased, And He turn away His anger from him.

PRO 6:34 For jealousy infuriates a person

PRO 19:19 A person of great anger shall bear the penalty, For if you rescue them, you will only have to do it again.

PRO 29:22 An angry person stirs up strife, And a hot‑tempered person abounds in transgression.

ROM 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

ROM 12:4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

ROM 12:5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

ROM 12:6 And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

ROM 12:7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;

ROM 12:8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Your spiritual gift becomes operational through normal spiritual growth.

The distinctions between believers in the eyes of God is never related to appearance, personality, or any form of human or alleged spiritual achievement.

a. Spiritual growth. Some believers use their equal privilege and equal opportunity and achieve phenomenal growth.

b. The second concept is the principle of spiritual gifts. The distinction among believers in spiritual gifts has its source in the sovereign wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

God the Holy Spirit has provided different spiritual gifts, – some differ in the manner of operation just as different functions are assigned to different parts of the human body.

1. The filling of the Holy Spirit which is the absolute concept of experiential Christianity.

2. The degree of spiritual growth which is the relative concept of experiential Christianity.

Many of the gifts can function to some degree even when a believer is out of fellowship – God honors the gift under the principle that it is not the individual but the grace and mercy of God that counts.

Spiritual gifts only function truly inside the PPOG under the enabling power of the Holy Spirit and momentum from metabolized doctrine, totally apart from emotion.

As you have momentum from doctrine, your spiritual gift will function, even without your cognition.

a. A spiritual gift is a unique ability sovereignly given to each believer by God the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation.

b. These gifts are for the purpose of serving the Lord and edifying the body of Christ, not bringing glory to self.

Thayer – charisma is extraordinary powers distinguishing certain Christians and enabling them to serve the church of Christ due to the power operating in their souls from Bible doctrine and the filling of the Spirit.

Point 3. There Are Two Categories of Spiritual Gifts Found in the Bible.

a. Temporary spiritual gifts which were operational during the pre-canon period of the Church Age, i.e., from AD 30 – AD 96, the pre‑canon period of the Church Age.

b. Permanent spiritual gifts function from the completion of the New Testament in 96 AD until the Rapture of the Church, whenever that occurs.

Temporary spiritual gifts only functioned during the pre‑canon period.

Temporary spiritual gifts were designed to take up the slack in the CA until the NT Canon was completed and circulated, and the mystery doctrine of the Church Age was reduced to writing.

On the other hand, permanent spiritual gifts function throughout the Church Age, but are emphasized from the time of the completion of the Canon.

Point 4. The Spiritual Gifts Found in the New Testament.

First of all in ROM 12:6-8, we have the gifts of prophecy, serving or ministering, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading or ruling and mercy.

ROM 12:6 And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

ROM 12:7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;

ROM 12:8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

1CO 12:8-10 = gifts of the word of wisdom, gift of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.

1CO 12:8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;

1CO 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

1CO 12:10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

1CO 12:28, we have the gifts of apostles, prophets, pastor-teachers, miracles, healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.

1CO 12:28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
In 1CO 13:8, there are gifts of prophecy, the gift of tongues, and the word of knowledge.

1CO 13:8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
In 1PE 4:11, we have the gift serving or ministering and the gift of speaking.

1PE 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

1PE 4:11 Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

EPH 4:11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,

1. The filling of the Holy Spirit is the absolute concept of experiential Christianity.

2. The degree of spiritual growth is the relative concept of experiential Christianity.

Spiritual gifts function only inside the PPOG. Therefore, the importance of understanding 1JO 1:9 and EPH 5:18is essential.
