What is the Righteousness of God. Part 2.

Friday, March 19, 2010

"It will be for our eternal benefit to learn that the secret to spiritual power is to be found not in struggle, but in surrender!"

“righteousness” - dikaiosune is “the character or quality of being right or just as God is in character;”

The first of which is that we are not the light, we walk in the light, 1Jn 1:7.

This righteousness is one of relationship. God has shared His righteousness with us. We reflect it back to Him as well as to our fellow believers and mankind.

Righteousness, as a gift from God, is what allows us to be what we should be in relationship to our Father and mankind.

“Dikaiosune is found in the sayings of the Lord Jesus, (a) of whatever is right or just in itself, whatever conforms to the revealed will of God, Matt. 5:6,10,20; John 16:8,10;

(b) whatever has been appointed by God to be acknowledged and obeyed by man. Matt. 3:15; 21:32.

Matt 3:15
But Jesus answering said to him [John the Baptist], "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him.

(c) the sum total of the requirements of God, Matt. 6:33.

The word of God is righteous and declares the righteousness of God in all its aspects, HEB 5:13.

HEB 5:13
For everyone who partakes only of milk [gospel only] is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.

2 Tim 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

dikaiosune is right action, a right thing done in a right way according to God’s definition of right, EPH 6:14 etc.

EPH 6:14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

The breastplate represents the imputed righteousness of God now in application of protecting your soul from the fiery missiles of the KOD.

For the most part the N.T., and especially Paul’s epistles, uses it of that gracious gift of God to men whereby all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are brought into right relationship with God.

“Righteousness is not said to be imputed to the believer save in the sense that faith is imputed (“reckoned’ is the better word) for righteousness. It is clear that in ROM 4:6,11, ‘righteousness reckoned’ must be understood in the light of the context, ‘faith reckoned for righteousness,’ ROM 4:3,5,9,22. ‘For’ in these places is eis, which does not mean ‘instead of,’ but ‘with a view to.’ The faith thus exercised brings the soul into vital union with God in Christ, and inevitably produces righteousness of life, that is, conformity to the will of God.” [Notes on Galatians, by Hogg and Vine.]

Righteousness is - (b) whatever has been appointed by God to be acknowledged and obeyed by man. Matt. 3:15; 21:32.

GEN 16:2 So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

GEN 15:18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your descendants I have given this land,
From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:

Why the transformation of the position to the experience?
Faith - doctrine = position only.
Faith + maximum doctrine = position and experience.

2 Tim 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
