The Shield of Faith.

All of the items of military equipment previously mentioned, the breastplate – the belt of truth, the combat shoes.
In the next three items, the shield, the helmet, and the sword, we have an obvious difference – You do not attach them to your body, they are all something separate from you.

Shield = thureon – one of the best shields in the ancient world. The Roman shield was originally shaped like a door.

In the ancient world, you would need your shield to protect you against the things being thrown at you before the enemy comes in person with his sword in hand, and attacks you closer and more directly.

Analogy = how the kingdom of darkness throws thoughts and ideas at us through the media, friends, family members, believers, unbelievers, and sometimes from your own presumptuous ideas.

ROM 7:14-15, For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

ROM 7:18-19, For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish.

The King James translation says “then I shall be innocent from THE great transgression.”

REV 12:10  “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.
His ultimate goal is do whatever must be done to take the believer away from the PPOG and the teaching of Bible doctrine.

THE DOCTRINE OF THE SHIELD

Point 1. Definition and Description. when we call something a doctrine, we are simply saying that we are going to note what God’s thoughts are concerning the subject we are noting.
The shield was a piece of defensive armor carried on the arm or hand in the ancient world used to protect the soldier from swords, spears, arrows, darts, and daggers.

Point 2. In the Bible, the shield is a weapon that a professional soldier uses as found in the Word of God, 2CH 14:1-8.

2CH 14:3  for he removed the foreign altars and high places, tore down the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherim, = All the foreign gods who were put up as altars and idols to be worshipped from the apostate kings in Israel before Asa.

The principle of doctrine is that when God gives rest, it is time to build and prepare.

Notice that God had given them rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.”

Notice how the shields were related to the valiant warriors.

Point 3. The shield was also used to reveal lack of military training and preparation, Judg 5:8.

The principle: No shield = no victory in both the natural and the spiritual realm.

Point 4. The word “shield” was also used for divine deliverance, 2SA 22:3, 35-36. As our shield, Jesus Christ has the strength to deliver and protects us from Satan’s attacks.

Point 5. The shield is also used for military disaster, 2SA 1:21. A shield not anointed with oil was a sign of defeat.

The Israeli soldiers would anoint their shields with oil before they went to war because the oil symbolized the ministry of God the Holy Spirit.

Point 6. The shield was used to memorialize freedom through military victory, 1KI 10:16-17.

Point 7. The shield portrays divine protection against military invasion, GEN 15:1; 28:7, 35:1-2; 115:9-11.

GEN 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.”

Point 8. In the New Testament the shield represents the faith-rest drill, EPH 6:16.

Remember our context in Eph 6, we are not dealing with problems with people but an attack made by the kingdom of darkness toward us basically using people to do so.
