Satan has invisible missiles that attack the soul and cause human viewpoint on the part of the believer which neutralizes them and draws them away from the PPOG.

EPH 6:14, we have had the combat belt or harness and in the same verse the breastplate.

EPH 6:15, we had the combat shoes.

All of these military items are firmly fastened to the body so that they are immovable.

You do not attach a shield on to your body, it is something separate from you.

The same applies to the helmet, which was more like a cap that was put on the head and taken off quite easily.

The sword is clearly not a part of us but a thing that we take up and use as the need arises.

When you come to this second group of pieces of the military equipment there is a suggestion immediately of activity.

Then suddenly an alarm is given that the enemy is attacking, and he immediately takes hold of his shield and his sword and puts on his helmet and rushes out.

Beginning with the shield there is the suggestion of activity, of an actual fight and battle.

The moment the enemy becomes active again and there is an engagement, you have to take up these things in order that you may be ready for the conflict.

All of these things have to be dealt with by the shield of faith.

GAL 5:22, the filling of the Spirit produces faith.

ROM 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

HAB 2:4 “Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith.

ACT 14:21-22, And after they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and {saying,} “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”

ROM 4:20, Yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,

ROM 14:22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.

By standing firm in the faith, 1CO 16:13 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

We are also to walk with and by the shield of faith, 2CO 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight‑‑

2CO 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!

COL 2:7 Having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith,

2TH 1:4 Therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure.

Learning to operate in faith protects the believer from falling away from the faith and becoming shipwrecked, in 1TI 1:19Keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.

1TI 6:12, Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called,

HEB 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

The faith rest drill and the shield of faith is also the basis for producing endurance, durability, persistence, and stability, in
JAM 1:3 Knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

1PE 5:9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

1JO 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world‑‑ our faith.

We are now ready for the shield which is the accusative singular direct object, the noun thureon is the word for shield.

Thureon is the Greek word for door and the Roman shield was originally shaped like a door.

In the ancient world, you would need your shield to protect you against the things being thrown at you before the enemy comes in person with his sword in hand, and attacks you more directly.
