Walking in light produces the light of divine good, which is experiential righteousness.

“children” - teknon - a) children under authority and b) students. We will never grow up if we don’t recognize authority. We are under the authority of the pastor/teacher and we are students of the word of God.

“light” - photos - the result of growing up spiritually is the shining forth of the Shekinah Glory through the production of divine good.

We don’t gain the assets of election and predestination; we already have them and are them, but in time, the mind and the soul, and especially the part of the soul called the heart, have to catch up with the glorious truth of our position.

Fruit refers to production of divine good that results from experiential sanctification (experiential righteousness and experiential sanctification are synonyms).

The fact that we constantly take in doctrine does not mean that we should be concerned about doing something for the Lord.

These things will come at the right time and the right place, whether it is witnessing or prayer or anything else that someone has emphasized to you as being spirituality or virtuous or the Christian way of life.

Production is always a result, it is never the means of spirituality.

John 8:35-36
And the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

“goodness” - agathosune - “agathos” = intrinsic good and the added “sune” makes it the principle of intrinsic good. This is a system that is always good.

“righteousness” - dikaiosune - dikaio = virtue and with “sune” it is the principle of virtue, which in God’s plan is always in grace.

This word can mean justification or positional righteousness. This is experiential righteousness which is the grace virtue of the maturing believer.

“truth” - aletheia - residual doctrine circulating in the soul. This is your storehouse of doctrine which always guides your goodness and grace virtue.

The conclusion is that all production of divine good is based on the intrinsic values of goodness and grace virtue and it is always the result of the doctrine circulating in your soul.

EPH 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

“trying to learn” - dokimazo = to test for the purpose of approval, to test a metal to determine its purity. Translation: “putting to the test.”

The purity or virtue of people and circumstances in life can all be tested or proved through doctrine. The more doctrine you have the more discerning you are and the more things you can discern.

1 Cor 2:15
But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man.
HEB 5:14
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

Phil 1:9-10
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;
1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

One of the wonderful benefits of discernment is the believer’s recognition that BD always passes the test of purity and so his confidence in the word grows.
