Doctrine of the Sins of the Tongue.

We have been noting the Doctrine of the Sins of the Tongue.

Point 1 dealt with definition and classification and we noted that first of all, sin is a violation of the law or standards of God and these divine standards are revealed in the Word of God. And we noted that there are four categories to the old sin nature.

1) The area of weakness. 2) The area of strength. 3) The trends of the sin nature. 4) The lust pattern of the OSN.

Now, there are also four categories of personal sin.

First, emotional sins. These are sins related to fear, which includes worry and anxiety. Sins related to hatred, which includes anger, violence, and murder. Sins related to self-pity and guilt.

Second, mental attitude sins. These include arrogance, pride, jealousy, implacability, bitterness, vindictiveness, inordinate ambition and inordinate competition, all motivational sins, and sinful thoughts.

Third and this is our subject, verbal sins which include maligning, slander, judging, lying, and verbal deception.

Fourth, overt sins.

They include chemical sins, sexual sins, criminal sins.

Point 2. The source of verbal sins.

All verbal sins originate from mental attitude sins, which lead to motivational sins; which lead to the Sins of the Tongue; which are designed to destroy your life.

Point 3. Out of the seven worst sins from God’s viewpoint, not man’s but Gods’ three are related to the tongue as verbal sins, Pro 6:16‑19.

PRO 6:16-23, There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers. My son, observe the commandment of your father, And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life,

Now, notice the corrected translation of verse 16 and on:

A right lobe that devises evil plans [anti-authority sins, conspiracy, and revolution], feet which run rapidly to evil [a trouble-maker], a false witness who utters lies [perjury], and a person who spreads strife among the brethren [gossip, slander, maligning, judging].

Point 4. The double standard related to the Sins of the Tongue. PSA 12:2, “They speak emptiness one to another with flattering lips; and with a double standard they speak.”

Point 5. There are Blessings from Avoiding the Sins of the Tongue.

PSA 34:12-19, Who is the man who desires life, And loves length of days that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against evildoers, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous; But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

This is the great blessing that comes to those who avoid the Sins of the Tongue.

If you want to have capacity for life, if you want prosperity, if you want length of days. All of these things come from keeping your tongue from speaking evil. Slander is such a serious sin. For example, the verbal sin of slander we are told comes from a heart filled with “evil thoughts.”

LUK 6:45, “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

Slander and the SINS OF THE TONGUE comes from the evil heart.

The SINS OF THE TONGUE often arises from hatred within.

PSA 109:3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause.

The SINS OF THE TONGUE’s can result from idleness.

1TI 5:11-13, But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married, thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous pledge. And at the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.

We are told that those who are classified as wicked are addicted to the Sins of the Tongue.

PSA 50:19-21, “You let your mouth loose in evil, And your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son. These things you have done, and I kept silence; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you, and state the case in order before your eyes.”

Hypocrites are addicted to the SINS OF THE TONGUE; PRO 11:9.

PRO 11:9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.

The SINS OF THE TONGUE was the main characteristic of the devil; REV 12:10.

REV 12:10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,   “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.

They who indulge in the SINS OF THE TONGUE are said to be fools, PRO 10:18, He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool.

Women are especially warned against the SINS OF THE TONGUE, TIT 2:3, Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,

Our Lord Jesus Christ was exposed to the SINS OF THE TONGUE constantly; MAT 26:60, and they did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward,

Rulers are exposed to the SINS OF THE TONGUE, JUD 1:8, Yet in the same manner these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.

JUD 1:9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

Point 6. The believers attitude toward the Sins of the Tongue.

  1. The believer should keep his tongue from it; 1PE 3:10, For, “Let him who means to love life and see good days. Refrain his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile.
  2. Strive to lay them it aside; EPH 4:28-32, and do not give the devil an opportunity. Let him who steals steal no longer; but rather let him labor, performing with his own hands what is good, in order that he may have something to share with him who has need. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender‑hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Believers should be warned against it; TIT 2:1-3, But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,

Believers are told to return good for it; 1CO 4:13, when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

Believers are blessed in enduring the SINS OF THE TONGUE; MAT 5:11, “Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me.

The believers reaction to verbal sins. They should not be listened to; 1SA 24:9, “And David said to Saul, Why do you listen to the words of men, saying, behold, David seeks to harm you’?”

Believers should be angry against the slanderer; PRO 25:21-24, If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; For you will heap burning coals on his head, And the Lord will reward you. The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue, an angry countenance. It is better to live in a corner of the roof Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

The reason is that slander separates friends; PRO 16:28; 17:9.

PRO 16:28, A perverse man spreads strife, And a slanderer separates intimate friends.

PRO 17:9, He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.

The believer’s reaction to verbal sins also should be that he realizes that the SINS OF THE TONGUE produces deadly wounds; PRO 18:8; 26:22.

PRO 18:8 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

PRO 26:22 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

It causes divisions among brethren; PRO 6:19, “A false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.”

The SINS OF THE TONGUE can even produce murder: PSA 31:13, “For I have heard the slander of many, terror is on every side; while they took counsel together against me, they schemed to take away my life.”

Now, I have to remind you once again that you have been given some fantastic things. Especially the fact the you have been given fantastic indescribable “Mystery Doctrines.” And, in all of human history, from Adam to the Lord Jesus Christ, not once did God let anyone know “Church-age mystery doctrine.”

Now, there are certain individuals, maybe even here this evening.

However, I’ll say certain words and you do not have to respond or acknowledge at all - you don’t have to do a thing. However, if you had a choice to be with all the different people you have been with your entire life and the Lord says to you.

“What would your last lookA, your last words, or your last thoughts, be
