“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11

This story takes place during the time of the Hypostatic Union.

James and his family moved from Illinois to Pennsylvania. Soon James made new friends and joined the wrestling team. One evening when his mom picked him up from wrestling practice, he couldn’t believe his eyes and yelled out for his mom to stop the car!

There was a huge black bear and her cubs in the neighbor’s yard going through their trash. They were both in shock; James and his mom had never seen a bear outside of a zoo! When they got home, they saw a huge paw print in the mud near their sliding patio door.

Oh no, what if the bear broke the glass and attacked them while they slept or attacked their dog Pooh Bear! I don’t blame James and his family for being afraid! They ended up moving back to Illinois.

Let’s think about sheep, they are completely helpless and they can’t defend themselves from mean and scary bear or lions. That’s why they need a shepherd to take care of them.

The shepherd makes sure they find pastures of yummy grass to eat and plenty of water to drink. Sheep like hanging out together, but once in a while, a sheep will wander off by itself. One day Wooly the sheep heard a loud motorcycle and got so scared that she ran as fast as she could to get away from it and she ended up falling on her back and she couldn’t get up.

A bit later when the shepherd was counting all of his flock, he noticed that Wooly was missing. He was worried that she was in danger. He left the rest of the sheep in the pasture and looked for Wooly everywhere. Finally he heard her saying baah…baah… I’ve fallen and can’t get up.

He was heartbroken when he saw her struggling to get up. He helped her up and carried her back to the pasture and he and the other shepherds celebrated and had bonfire and roasted hot dogs and made S-mores’.

In our bible story today, Jesus taught a short story called a parable

about a lost sheep. The snobby Scribes and the Pharisees thought they were better than other people. In fact they wrongly thought that they were going to be in Heaven because they were good people and did lots of good deeds. They didn’t think they were sinners at all.

They considered His followers to be a bunch of low life sinners and losers and wondered how on earth He could have supper with them and hang around with them.

Jesus didn’t think of them as losers at all though because his friends all knew that they were not good enough to get to heaven on their own. They had believed in Him as their Savior.

READ in Luke 15:1-7

To help them to understand, He said to them, who among you wouldn’t leave your flock of 99 sheep behind and go out searching for the lost sheep? I’ll bet after you found it, you would carry it home and you and the rest of your friends would celebrate because you found the lost sheep.

He then told them that there will be more happiness in heaven over one sinner who is also called a lost sheep, who believes in Jesus as their savior than over ninety-nine people that think they are getting to Heaven by their own good deeds.

“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for His sheep.” John 10:11

  Good Shepherd = Jesus

Sheep = every person in the world are sinners

Jesus died on the cross for all of your sins; simply believe that He died for your sins and you will be saved and your soul will go to Heaven when you die.

Nobody gets to Heaven by being a good person!
