THE HOLY SPIRIT
Part 2
May 27, 2018
BEFORE we begin, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, take a moment to name your sins to God the Father. This will allow you to be filled with the power of The Holy Spirit as you read this booklet (EPH 5:18 & 1JO 1:9). IF YOU HAVE never believed in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have that opportunity right now. Simply tell God the Father that you are believing on His Son Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. If you make that decision, you are now a believer and will always be a child of God! When you die, you will spend eternity with Him forever in heaven! (JOH 3:16 & ACT 16:31).
Last week, we established through Scripture that The Holy Spirit is not a ghost or energy but an actual person. Not only is The Holy Spirit a Person, but He is a Unique Person, for He is God. Proofs of personality are not necessarily proofs of Deity; but proofs of Deity are proofs of His personality. If God is a Person, and if the Spirit is also God, then He is a Person also.
The Holy Spirit has several different names and titles. He is called: The Spirit of God in GEN 1:2: The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. And again in MAT 3:16: After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him…
He is called The Spirit of the Lord by Jesus Christ in LUKE 4:18: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed…” He is called The Spirit of Yahweh in ISA 61:1: The Spirit of Yahweh is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners… He is called The Spirit of the living God in 2COR 3:3: being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
The Holy Spirit is called The Eternal Spirit in HEB 9:14: how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? He is called The Spirit of Glory in 1PET 4:14: If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. He is called The Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus in ROM 8:2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Five of The Holy Spirit’s titles reveal His relationship to The Son. The Spirit of Christ is one: However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. (ROM 8:9). Another title is The Spirit of Jesus Christ found in PHIL 1:19: … for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ… Another one is The Spirit of Jesus which is found in ACTS 16:7: …and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them… Another title is The Spirit of His Son which is found in GAL 4:6: Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” And in ACTS 5:9, His title is The Spirit of the Lord: Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.”
There are titles that reveal the nature of His Ministry. In 1PET 4:14, He is called The Spirit of Glory: If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. He is called The Spirit of life, the agent of regeneration, ROM 8:2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. Another of His titles is The Spirit of Holiness: …who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord… (ROM 1:4) He is called The Spirit of Grace in HEB 10:29: How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? In ROM 8:15, He is called The Spirit of adoption: For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” He is the one who brings about our adoption into the Royal Family of God. And He is called The Comforter in JOH 15: But the Helper [Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby], the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you. (The Amplified Bible) This title indicates His role as nourishing, guiding, strengthening, and assuring the believer in his spiritual life.
It is through The Holy Spirit that God reveals His Word. 1COR 2:9-13 states: …just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
He is called The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding; The Spirit of Counsel; The Spirit of Knowledge and of the Fear of The Lord – all in ISA 11:2: The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. In JOH 15:26, He is called The Spirit of Truth. And a very important thing to know is that The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the Word of God.
The Holy Spirit also had a hand in creation. Seven verses speak of various aspects of the Spirit’s Work in Creation. GEN 1:2 puts Him there: The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Elihu tells us in JOB 33:4: “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” David wrote in PSA 104:30: You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the ground.
The Bible teaches us that The Spirit was involved in the general planning of the universe. He was active in the creation of the stars of heaven. He participated in the Restoration of the earth. It also teaches us that He worked in creating the animals and the creation of man.
